Jaspreet Singh, 2006 - 2007 Markin-Flanagan Canadian Writer-in-Residence

Jaspreet SinghJaspreet SinghJaspreet Singh was born in India and moved to Canada in 1990. His critically-acclaimed book of short stories, Seventeen Tomatoes: Tales from Kashmir, won the Quebec Writers' Federation 2004 McAuslan First Book Prize. The Montreal Gazette called Seventeen Tomatoes a "haunting fairy tale" and The Calgary Herald praised the stories for "capturing the two sides of Kashmir brilliantly". In 2002, Quill & Quire magazine identified Singh as one of "five new talents to watch." His stories have appeared in Alphabet City (MIT Press), ascent, Coming Attractions, subTerrain, Maisonneuve, World Cup Cricket Anthology, Fiddlehead, and Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope. His work has been featured on CBC Radio's special Remembrance Day edition and he recently finished writing Speak, Oppenheimer, a play, for Montreal 's Infinite Theatre.

Singh holds a PhD in chemical engineering from McGill University and has worked as a research scientist and teacher. He has also performed in street theatre in India, and on stage in Montreal .
