Poet and author Alberto RÃos, the 2009 Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Visiting Writer

Photo: Lupita Barron-RiosAlberto RÃos’s ten collections of poetry include The Smallest Muscle in the Human Body, a finalist for the National Book Award. His most recent book is The Theater of Night, which received the 2007 PEN/Beyond Margins Award. Published in the New Yorker, Paris Review, Ploughshares, and other journals, he has also written three short story collections and a memoir, Capirotada, about growing up on the Mexican border. Regent’s Professor and the Katharine C. Turner Chair in English, RÃos has taught at Arizona State University for 26 years.Â
This event is free and open to the public. A reception and book signing will follow the reading.
Sina Queyras, last year's Markin-Flanagan Canadian Writer-in-Residence, will be in Calgary on Thursday, February 26 for the launch of her new book, Expressway - which she completed during her M-F residency. Her new poetry collection uses the modes of the Romantic poets to explore the world of modern transportation and mobility.

Lynn comes to Calgary courtesy of an exchange program between the Markin-Flanagan program and the U of A Department of English. Each year, these institutions host the other school's writer-in-residence for free public events.Â

As part of an exchange program, each year the U of C's Markin-Flanagan Distinguished Writers Program and the U of A's Department of English host the other school's writer-in-residence for free public events.

Jaspreet Singh, the 2006-2007 Writer-in-Residence, reads at Location/Dislocation as part of the 2008 WordFest. Singh and authors, Nadeem Aslam, Steven Galloway and Rawi Hage will offer individual insights on cultural change and a shifting sense of identity.Â

Sina Queyras, the 2007-2008 Markin-Flanagan Canadian Writer-in-Residence, launches Nineteen Short Stories by Samuel Beckett, a chapbook written during her residency.
Each story in Nineteen Short Stories by Samuel Beckett is a slant attempt to both get at the core of each of Beckett's nineteen plays, and to in some way get at the most slender idea of the story. The chapbook, published by No Press, was written during Queyras's Markin-Flanagan residency.
