"The Porcupine River Caribou Herd and the Gwichin Way of Life: The Land Where Life Begins Versus the Greed for Oil”

Please join us to attend a talk this Thursday, March 30th at 4:00pm by Norma Kassi, Director of Indigenous Collaboration at the Arctic Institute of Community-Based Research (AICBR). Norma Kassi will be the last lecture this year in our CIH (Calgary Institute for the Humanities) Working Group "Energy in Society." Her talk is entitled: "The Porcupine River Caribou Herd and the Gwichin Way of Life: The Land Where Life Begins Versus the Greed for Oil."

Norma Kassi was raised in Old Crow, Yukon, is Vuntut Gwitchin, and a member of the Wolf Clan. She was elected into Yukon's Legislative Assembly as Member for Vuntut Gwitchin, a position she held until 1992. During this time, she was selected by the Elders of the Gwitchin Nation to act as a spokesperson on behalf of the Gwitchin people for the preservation of the Porcupine Caribou Herd. She has also been the Environmental Manager for the Council of Yukon First Nations, and co-founded AIBCR, which is dedicate to identifying health research priorities with Yukon First Nations, capacity building and training, and developing knowledge translation that is inclusive, sustainable and beneficial to communities. She has been awarded the National Wildlife Federation's Conservation and Achievement Award and the Goldman Prize. Norma Kassi was also elected Chief of Vuntut Gwitchin in November 2010.
