Poucel: Abstract

Horizons of the Real : Littéralité, Elegy and a Propositional Poetics

An introductory lecture on currents in French experimental poetry from 1985 to 2005, with a particular focus on the work of Emmanuel Hocquard. In addition to outlining the basic tenets of the ‘negative modernism’ that characterizes strains of post-WWII French poetry, this talk details Hocquard’s notions of 'up-side down elegies,' ‘robinsonades’ and a poetics of proposition informed by the writings of Ludwig Wittgenstein.
