Abstract: Carroll/Curtin

What we learn about language acquisition from the way acquire sound systems V. grammar

Suzanne Curtin (LLC & Psych) & Susanne E. Carroll (LLC)

The question of how do people learn language is enormous. There are questions about 1st language acquisition, 2nd language acquisition, the Critical Period Hypothesis, simultaneous bilingual acquisition, how best to teach languages, and many, many more. In this talk, we bring together two researchers to speak briefly about: what we can learn about language acquisition by studying how people learn sound systems (phonetics/phonology) vs. what we can learn about language acquisition by studying how people learn grammar (morphosyntax). These two different components shed light on some of the above big-picture questions in unique and interesting ways.
