“The Nexus of Translation: Foreign Language, Creative Writing, and the Teaching of Literature”

This presentation looks at translation as a bridge between disciplinary practice and a variety of traditional institutional configurations. It projects translation against the contexts of proficiency-based foreign language teaching methods, the workshop model of creative writing instruction, and the invention-based interpretive techniques of literary history and analysis. Translation plies a middle ground, allowing a healthy corrective to often self-centered expressive models by encouraging a focus on other people’s words, all while honing skills that both depend upon and augment the practice of writing in constructive ways.
