Blended Teaching Approach in Spanish Language Classrooms

Blended Teaching Approach in Spanish Language Classrooms: Blending Face-to-Face Program Delivery with Online Aula Virtual de Español (AVE) is a research project funded by Alberta Learning involving Dr. Martine Pellerin and Carlos Soler Montes (Aula Cervantes) as principal investigators.

In the last decade or so, we have witnessed a greater push to adopt web-based and online learning to enhance the language classroom experience. In the past, the face-to-face traditional learning approach has been used as the main way of transmitting the content of programs in the language classroom. With the increase in the use of information and communicative technology, greater opportunities in the target language have arisen through web-based and online learning environments. This project looks at the ways in which educators can adopt a "blended learning" approach that combines both face-to-face and online learning into their second language (Spanish) teaching practice.

K-12 Second Language Curricula Project

Correlating Spanish, French and German Alberta K-12 Curricula with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is a project sponsored by Alberta Education and conducted by Dr. Sandra Hoenle (GSEA; Principal Investigator), which examines the correlation between the Alberta French and Spanish Programs of Study with the CEFR.  Dr. Hoenle and her team will conduct a detailed analysis of selected Alberta language curricula for French and Spanish to correlate particular grade level outcomes with CEFR levels. The project has recently been expanded to include selected German Programs of Study.

ACCESS Projects

In 2004 we received generous funding from Alberta learning under the ACCESS grant to undertake research into language learning and teaching. After a highly competitive process, a select group of projects were approved for funding. These projects include research and development of learning and teaching objects, technology projects and cultural investigations related to languages. It is our intention that Alberta teachers and students will benefit from these projects in the future.
