In Memoriam

The Werklund School mourns the passing of our colleague and friend, Dr. Gale Parchoma

The Werklund School of Education is mourning the passing of our friend and colleague, Dr. Gale Parchoma, PhD, on October 3, following her courageous struggle with cancer.

Gale joined the Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary in January 2013.  Over the course of three years, she received tenure and was nominated for a University of Calgary Full-time Academic Staff Teaching award at the associate professor rank.

Gale was generous in spirit, giving of her expertise and time, working with colleagues and graduate students. She was an active collaborator, leading a funded research program, publishing peer reviewed articles and book chapters, serving on editorial boards for several journals, and presenting her research at national and international conferences.  Gale was a wonderful colleague and a valued mentor, supervising doctoral and master students to the completion of their programs, while collaborating with Werklund School colleagues as a co-supervisor and a research collaborator. She spearheaded the development of the MEd Computer Supported Collaborative Learning program and served as its academic coordinator. She also served as the academic coordinator of MEd Learning Technologies. Gale deeply cared about improving our own teaching practice, and led the effort of developing and documenting signature pedagogies of the Werklund School. Many colleagues will remember and appreciate her gentle but passionate push toward the quality of teaching and research during her time at the Werklund School of Education.
