It is a great pleasure for me as the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary to welcome you, and to encourage you to get to know us better.
Ours is still a new faculty, having been created in 2010 out of the amalgamation of the four former Faculties of Social Sciences, Humanities, Communication & Culture, and Fine Arts.
Faculty, staff, students and alumni across our disciplines take great pride in our history, and in the significance of our evolution into a large, diverse and vibrant Faculty of Arts that creates and shares knowledge to help shape our province, country and world.
The Faculty of Arts is integral to the work of the university, and to the life of our local and extended communities. As the University of Calgary moves closer to its 50th anniversary in 2016, we take seriously our key role in the fulfilment of the Eyes High mission to become one of Canada’s top five research universities, grounded in innovative learning and teaching and fully engaged with the communities we serve and lead.
We are a dynamic and diverse academic community in arts, and we do important work. In the pages of our website you will see evidence of faculty members conducting exciting and ground-breaking research and creative activity; of students highly engaged in an innovative teaching and learning environment; and of all members of our faculty participating in activities that connect our university endeavours to the broader world. We are extremely confident in the excellence of our various programs, institutes and centres, and we take great pride in the accomplishments of our students, faculty, staff and alumni.
We look forward to your engagement, support and participation in the life of our faculty. Please take note of our upcoming events and news, and feel free to follow the Faculty of Arts on Twitter @UCalgary_Arts. You can also follow my own Twitter feed @R_Sigurdson.
