Study abroad

Step outside and make the world your classroom.

Study African history, politics, and culture in Ghana, experience food culture in Spain, investigate gender and development issues in Thailand, all while gaining course credit. Or why not spend a semester (or a whole year) at one of more than 80 exchange partner universities?

As a student in the Faculty of Arts, you have the opportunity to complete course credits internationally. Further, there are certain programs that have an intercultural requirement built into them which can be satisfied either by taking courses at our Calgary campus that examine other cultures, countries and languages, or by participating in travel-study programs around the world.

The option of internationalizing your education through experiences abroad richly enhances your degree, while also broadening your career horizons. Employers are increasingly looking for the adaptability, independence, global and cultural awareness, and communication skills that students involved in experiences abroad have acquired.

What opportunities are available?

Experiences abroad can take many forms — and not all of them involve course credit and studying! The University of Calgary helps facilitate group study programs, individual study programs, internships, practicums, service learning, volunteer and work positions abroad.

For more information, including travel funding and awards, visit the Centre for International Students and Study Abroad.

Worldwide learning

Robyn Lacy, a student with the Department of Archaeology, spent an academic year on exchange at Durham University in England. Here is what she had to say when she returned from her adventure:

"Everyone should be able to study abroad during their university career; it's just such a wonderful and definitely eye-opening experience! You get a taste for another country's university system, as well as seeing another side to your chosen field of study. And you get to live in another culture...which is just great!"
