7 Stories

Morris Panych’s acclaimed dark comedy 7 Stories is a brilliantly sharp, fast-paced ride into the absurdity of life, told from the ultimate vantage point: the edge. Perched precariously on the seventh-storey ledge of a building, a man teeters on the brink, contemplating the end. But just as he’s about to leap, he’s interrupted by a parade of quirky, self-absorbed neighbours. Each eccentric character unloads their own hilariously absurd tale, building to a surprising and poignant meditation on existence and human connection.

Running time: 90 minutes (no intermission)

I first read 7 Stories in my undergraduate program and was immediately struck by its humour. I know what you’re thinking: “How can a play where the central character is thinking of jumping off a building be hilarious?” Although suicide is the opening image we see as an audience, I believe the more prevalent theme is the randomness of existence, but not in an inherently tragic way. What drew me to this play was the playwright's creation of heightened characters who seemed trapped in roles they had carved out for themselves, unable or unwilling to notice when someone steps outside the mould and onto the ledge. These characters, in seven windows, resign themselves to their fates. The only person brave enough to question why things have to be a certain way is brought to the ledge of a building, and every character, but one, is too locked into the status quo to reach out. They take this individual and his questioning as nothing more than a joke. Comedy ensues.

At this moment in time, it is very clear to me that, rather than being stuck in windows or frames, we are constantly drawn to our devices. Isolating ourselves from everyone while simultaneously showcasing our inner workings in a curated, controlled way. We let people see what they want to see, small glimpses of our lives, without necessarily focusing or paying attention to others’ lives. The world tells us we have to be a certain way, just like these characters; we are all playing a part, but is that the part we are supposed to play? What if instead of jumping and falling, we took a chance, a leap and fell upwards into enlightenment?

7 Stories first premiered at The Arts Club in Vancouver in 1989. I had the pleasure of having coffee with Peter Anderson, the actor who originated the role of The Man, this past summer. After reading Morris Panych’s play for years, I didn’t know what to expect when I first met Peter. Was he going to be a brooding figure? Perhaps an individual wracked with nerves? A sullen shell of his character, The Man? Instead, I was met with a lively, generous, and wonderfully funny individual who always seemed to have a twinkle in his eye and a thoughtful response to my numerous questions. What I was expecting from the man who originated The Man wasn’t what I got, but it was exactly what I needed. This idea that someone on the ledge of a building can still be hopeful, that a couple who fight can still be in love, and that a playwright like Morris Panych can make people think, feel, and, more importantly, laugh.

Working with this cast, crew and design team has been fantastic. It has challenged, enlightened and delighted me. 7 Stories has allowed me to dig deep and have wonderful conversations about life, death, comedy, politics, religion and just about anything else you can think of. I could not have done it without the support of my family, friends and supervisor, Christine Brubaker. I hope this show makes you think, feel and laugh. And why not take that leap you’ve been putting off? You might just like where you land.

Lane Shoredee

Lighting Designer

Lane Shordee is an artist based in Mohkinstsis / Calgary, working at the crossroads of theatre, public art, and sustainability. His work challenges traditional ideas of set design and public art installations by prioritizing the incorporation of found objects and repurposed materials. Whether creating theatre sets or props, community-engaged art projects, or unconventional storytelling spaces, Shordee’s practice is rooted in the belief that art-making should prioritize sustainability as much as being in community with one another.

Juno Fairweather

Sound Designer

Juno Fairweather (they/them) is a fifth year drama student and sound designer at the University of Calgary. Juno’s work has been featured in productions for The Ignite Festival, Common Ground Festival, and the ND Play Fest. Juno is currently the senior sound technician for UofC’s ND Theatre.

Juno worked with director Jessica Buchanan in the 2025 Alchemy Festival as sound designer for This is a Play and they are  grateful for the opportunity to be working alongside someone who encourages others to challenge the way they think about theatre.

Juno’s hope is to bring the elements of theatre often not thought about into the light and highlight their importance to the life of a play. This idea inspired Juno to invite their fellow student - and friend - Maya Whitbread to compose alongside their design. Juno is thrilled to be working with such talented creatives and hopes you love the show.

His creative background spans lighting design, projection, XR media, immersive environments, and advanced show control systems, with professional experience in both traditional theatrical contexts and experimental, technology-driven productions.

Awstin’s creative practice is multidisciplinary by nature, exploring how emerging technologies inform creative decision-making, storytelling, and live performance workflows. Shaping creative elements of live production, from lighting and media to spatial composition and performer–audience interactions.

His professional experience includes working with Canadian Stage on productions such as Tartuffe, He Who Falls, and Betroffenheit, as well as The Overcoat: A Musical Tailoring, and motion capture integration for Carrie Underwood's The Storyteller Tour, Disney On Ice and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child through his work with CAST Software and BlackTrax. Beyond theatre, Awstin has contributed to large-scale medical simulation training programs for critical services and healthcare institutions across Canada and North America.

As such, Sunny is delighted to play a part in telling you (the audience) 7 Stories tonight, and hope you (the aforementioned audience!) garner as much bubbling joy watching it, as they did making it.
