About Elevator Project
Abby and I began like so many drama students do: sitting in the same 200 level class in the basement, completing the same assignments, both convinced that acting was the path forward. But as our time at the university unfolded, we began to drift, not apart, but outward. Abby moved toward set and technical design, mask work, and visual storytelling. I gravitated toward playwriting and directing. Still, acting remained our shared foundation, the place we always returned to.
Over the years, we immersed ourselves in every corner of theatre we could reach, MainStages, independent projects, experimental work, backstage roles, leadership positions. We became artists who tried everything, who were endlessly inspired, who constantly came back to one another bursting with ideas shaped by our experiences. One idea, in particular, refused to let go: the possibility of a student-run MainStage.
As students, we are no strangers to budget cuts, restructuring, and institutional limitations. Often, these changes feel distant and immovable, decisions made without us, about us. We found ourselves asking a simple but radical question: What if we had control? What if students were trusted to lead? What if a MainStage could be a space to try things, to fail safely, to explore boldly?
We noticed that many students never got the opportunity to experience a large-scale theatrical production, or believed that a drama degree meant acting and nothing else. We believed that once, too. But theatre is expansive. You can be a designer, a playwright, a lighting board operator, a clown, a puppeteer, a mask-maker, a director, an actor, or something that doesn’t even have a title yet.
The Elevator Project exists to hold space for those what ifs. It is a platform for curiosity, experimentation, and student leadership. It is an invitation to step inside, press a button, and see where the ride takes you.
And remember, even if your learning begins in the basement of a university, there’s only one direction the elevator can go…
We Are Animals is a dark period piece. It’s rooted in instinct (Animalistic or not), grief, protection, jealousy, fear and the ways those instincts can turn feral when left unspoken. I believe this play explores how people behave when they feel threatened, unseen, or desperate to survive. It has the twist with the animal logic that takes over when social rules stop being enough.
Audience Advisories: We Are Animals - Language, Violence, Abuse
Directors Note's
If you were to pull first-year Sophia aside, and tell them about The Elevator Project…I think they would have passed out on the spot. The seed for this piece was planted years ago, inspired by the video game “Rusty Lake Hotel”. From there, the ideas multiplied. Mask work has been a central inspiration for both Abby and me, and it felt like the perfect language for this story. Animals already exist in a space of symbolism and instinct; masks push that further. In this world, every character is required to hold two truths at once, who they are outwardly, and what they conceal beneath the surface. We Are Animals asks what happens when those masks begin to crack, when instinct, guilt, grief, and desire seep through. I’m drawn to stories that live in the uncomfortable spaces, the ones that feel a little too intense, a little too revealing. I would not have been able to do any of this without the extraordinary cast who brought such care, curiosity, and generosity to this work. I am endlessly grateful to every student involved. There was no small role in this project, every contribution was essential, every person vital to bringing this strange little world to life.

Maria Coutts (she/her) is a 1st year English major at the University of Calgary with a passion for theatre. She first became interested in drama at a young age, participating in several acting camps at Arts Commons during the summertime. This would then carry forward into middle school where she would participate in a production of Beauty and The Beast Jr, sparking a true love of theatre. Following that, most of her theatre experience came from high school, where she would participate in productions of Ghostlight and Rogues' Gallery as well as taking an active role as a leader in the arts. Outside of theatre, Maria has always loved reading, creative writing, and playing games with her friends!
We Are Animals, Rabbit
Joshua Lopez Ruiz (He/They) is a 1st year drama student at the University of Calgary. His charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent stem from the hardships he endured back in Mexico.
Often looked down on by his peers throughout his childhood, Josh would seek refuge by
isolating himself and watching horror movies such as Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Carrie and
Saw thus sparking his interest in acting. He would make his own Halloween costumes inspired
by the antagonists of said movies and would find that they didn’t really need to fit in with society to enjoy themselves. He immigrated to Canada in 2017 and would find that people here
understood him more than they did back at home, thus creating new bonds with people that
truly understood him and embraced him for being himself.
We Are Animals, Assistant Stage Manager (Props)

In the near future, Ivy is determined to take up and be part of more works to increase their repertoire. Watch out, Ivy is coming!
Ivy also hopes you enjoy the Elevator Project, a passion project promoting Cast and Crew Undergraduates.

Caught in a violent storm at sea, the young sailor Lips finds himself shipwrecked on a deserted island. Struggling with hunger, loneliness, and the ghosts of his lost crewmates, he clings to hope and his unusual fondness for crabs as a source of comfort. A darkly comic and haunting tale of madness, that will be splashing the thin line between man and crab.

Thank you to the actors for their willingness to play, grow together, and work for each other as a team. Thank you to the designers for creating the world we work in.
