The mid-career faculty advancement program is a series of three workshops focused on career planning and enhancing the faculty member’s profile in research and teaching innovation. The workshops provide participants with an opportunity to self-reflect on strengths and areas of growth as well as create a peer-network that will support them in achieving goals.

Enhancing Your Academic Career: Building Credibility through Effective Time Management and Collaborative Relationships

Facilitators: Marty Heeg and Florentine Strzelczyk

This session has been specifically designed for academic staff in the Faculty of Arts as a foundational discussion in our Faculty Development Workshop Series.  This workshop will focus on personal effectiveness – how to get the results you need for your career development in a way that is sustainable – so that you can get even better outcomes in the future.  It will be highly interactive and focus on two key areas with practical solutions:

  • Prioritization - how can you follow through on your most important goals by effectively managing your time?
  • Collaboration – how can you engage with colleagues and students in a way that enhances your ability to build the most productive professional relationships?

The discussion will be applied to the opportunities and challenges of developing your academic career as a researcher, teacher and supervisor.  This workshop has been adapted from Academic Leadership Academy courses which have been very well received by U of C academic staff across campus.

This session will be led by Marty Heeg, Senior Consultant with the Academic Leadership Academy. Marty has developed and facilitated over 40 professional development courses for academics at the University of Calgary and University of Saskatchewan in the last 12 years. Marty presently facilitates two courses at UCalgary — Effectiveness in the Academy and The Leadership Primer.
