Thunderbird Corrupting Forwarded Attachments (Word, Excel, PDF)

Submitted by Visitor (not verified) on Wed, 2011-06-15 10:44

Problem Description: When forwardind a Microsoft Office Document (.doc .docx .xls .xlsx) or a PDF, Thunderbird seems to corrupt the attachment and the recipient of the email receives a bunch of garbled text where the attachment should have been.

Problem Solution:

NOTE: This is going to be written in more of a general form as opposed to specific. That way, if Thunderbird changes their menu layout signifcantly, the article will still be relevant.

  1. Open up Thunderbird
  2. We're going to open up the Config Editor
    • In Thunderbird 3.xx do the following:
    • Tools --> Options --> Advanced --> Config Editor
  3. Using the "filter" bar, Modify the following values accordingly:
    • mail.file_attach_binary --> True
    • mail.content_disposition_type --> 1
    • mail.inline_attachments --> False
  4. Restart Thunderbird

Further Reading: A description of all the settings found in the config editor can be found here.

Edit: Users have also suggested going into the Thunderbird Profile folder (User\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird) and deleting the mimeTypes.rdf file
