Tell us about your thesis topic:

This thesis explores how Giovan Maria Cecchi uses poetic language, allegory, and Petrarchan influence to present a moral deliberation in his compelling sixteenth-century religious moral plays, the sacre rappresentazioni.

Through close readings of Disprezzo dell’Amore e Beltà Terrena and Duello della Vita Attiva e Contemplativa, the thesis reveals how Cecchi tactfully guides his audience, the youth of the Confraternity, toward spiritual and philosophical reflection. By blending a study of the poetry and moral deliberations contained in the sacred theater, the study demonstrates how Cecchi’s didactic  moral plays reorient Petrarchan earthly desire toward divine contemplation.

What was the most valuable outcome of the graduate program for you?

The most valuable outcome of the graduate program for me was the discovery and establishment of a supportive academic community. I had the privilege of meeting other wonderful graduate students who continuously offered their support.

I am also grateful to have been an active member of VOX, our LLAC Graduate Group, allowing me to worth with other wonderful people and organize events where we were able to share our research in a constructive space.

This great academic environment was also made up of the many students I met during my graduate teaching assistant and research roles. These fellow students were wonderful

Finally, I am grateful for the faculty members who fostered a welcoming research environment, allowing me to grow as a student.

What are the next steps/plans for you?

I will be pursuing a PhD at the University of Calgary's LLAC program beginning Fall 2025. I look forward to this new beginning!
