Distinguished members of the Faculty

Approximately 5,000 University of Calgary
students graduate during spring convocation ceremonies beginning June 6. The University of
Calgary will also present an Honorary Degree, two President’s Awards, and the
Order of the University of Calgary to four distinguished members of the Faculty
of Arts.


June 7, 9:30 a.m. – honorary
degree recipient

Brian
Keating
channels his efforts, and those of the people he inspires, into
significant environmental and conservation initiatives, particularly in North
America and Africa. His efforts have resulted in more than $2 million in funding
for various conservation initiatives. Among Keating’s many roles and
contributions, he has taught as an adjunct professor in the department of
Anthropology.

p.m. – University of Calgary President’s Award recipients

Meg
Martin
, BA 11, political science honours student, became heavily
involved in the Model UN, various clubs and her faculty. She became the
Students' Union Vice President Academic and was a recipient of two Program for
Undergraduate Research Experience (PURE) awards, Martin researched peace and
sustainability in Canada and the Middle East.

Kay She,
BA 11, political science student, wrote for the Gauntlet, was active in her
sorority and served as Vice President External for the Students' Union, where
she worked on everything from student housing and improving the student loan
program to providing better daycare for students with children.


June 9, 9:30 a.m. – Order of the
University of Calgary recipient

Heather
Smith-Watkins
has been a champion for thousands of learners and
artists, solved a myriad of logistical, academic and personal predicaments and
has helped to improve procedures and programs, thus making the lives of
innumerable students, faculty and staff less stressful and more fulfilling.
