Dr. Frank Stahnisch elected to the Royal Society of Canada

Former CIH Fellow recognized for distinguished contributions to history of medicine

The Calgary Institute for the Humanities is delighted to congratulate Dr. Frank Stahnisch on his election to the Royal Society of Canada. This prestigious honour recognizes Dr. Stahnisch's outstanding contributions to scholarship and his distinguished career as a historian of medicine and health care.

Dr. Stahnisch holds the Alberta Medical Foundation/Hannah Professorship in the History of Medicine and Health Care at the Cumming School of Medicine and is also a professor in the Department of History in the Faculty of Arts. His research spans the development of experimental physiology and laboratory medicine, the historical relationship between neurology and philosophy of mind, and the epistemology of the life sciences from the 18th to 21st centuries.

Dr. Stahnisch has maintained strong ties with the Calgary Institute for the Humanities after serving as an Annual Fellow in 2021-22. He was a convenor of the C-STEMS (Centre for Science, Technology, Environment, and Medicine Studies) Interdisciplinary Working Group in 2019-20 and again from 2022-24.
