March 20 campus memorial service set for Margo Husby

A campus memorial service is planned for the evening of March 20 in honour of Margo Husby, a beloved instructor in the Department of Communication and Culture who passed away on February 13, after a short illness.

Margo's colleagues, students and classmates wil speak at the service about her impact and the legacy she left on both teaching and learning at the University of Calgary. Her daughter Andrea Scheelar will also deliver her interpretation of her mother's "Last Lecture."

The March 20 memorial will be held at the Boris Roubakine Recital Hall, Craigie Hall C Room 105, from 7 to 9 p.m.

A statement from the Department of Communication and Culture described Husby – whose research interests included ethics in post-secondary teaching, myth and popular culture and women’s roles in Christianity – as “an inspired teacher and a great friend.”

Husby came to the University of Calgary as a mature student in the undergraduate Communications Studies program and went on to complete a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy.

A strong believer in lifelong learning, she had nearly completed a fourth degree, a Master of Social Work, at the time of her death.

“I have been hearing some wonderful stories about the positive difference she made in the lives of so many students in Communication and Culture and in the Faculty of Arts over the years,” says Dean of the Faculty of Arts Richard Sigurdson.

A funeral for Husby was held February 19 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church. The Dr. Margo Husby Mature Student Scholarship has been established in her name. Click here for details about how to donate online.

Memorial tributes to the scholarship may also be made by phone (403-220-8261), or by cheque made out to the University of Calgary (Dr. Margo Husby Mature Student Scholarship in the memo line), c/o U of C Development Office, 2500 University Dr. N.W., Calgary, Alta., T2N 1N4.
