UCalgary highlights its sector-wide expertise at Global Energy Show

The University of Calgary attended this month’s Global Energy Show 2025 (GES 2025) in Calgary, showcasing its transdisciplinary research and innovation while offering a glimpse into the future of energy.

From June 10-12, GES 2025 brought together nearly 35,000 energy professionals, innovators and decision makers to explore the latest advancements across the world of energy, including oil, gas, renewables and emerging technologies.

Focused on the future

With new academic offerings such as the relaunched Oil and Gas Engineering program and the upcoming Energy Science bachelor’s degree, UCalgary continues to evolve alongside the energy sector, linking research, talent development and industry collaboration to help prepare for the future.

At GES 2025, UCalgary spotlighted its transdisciplinary research and initiatives aimed at cultivating entrepreneurial spirit within the evolving global energy ecosystem.

UCalgary expertise showcased

As a Platinum sponsor, the university hosted an interactive booth in the conference’s Decarbonization Zone, featuring real-world solutions and forward-looking research, that reflects the depth and diversity of energy-focused work happening across UCalgary. 

The booth highlighted innovation in clean energy and sustainable engineering, as well as new models for energy education and workforce development. Staff from the Schulich Makerspace were also on hand to demonstrate 3D-printing technology.

Beyond the exhibition floor, UCalgary experts took part in key conversations shaping the future of energy. 

At the Energy Influencers Conference, Dr. Marwa Hannouf, PhD’18, a postdoctoral associate with the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (SAPL), presented research on hydrogen sustainability for Alberta’s energy sector.

Dr. Ian Gates, BSc (Eng)’90, PhD, associate vice-president (Innovation) and co-author of Hannouf’s paper, shared insights on how digitalization and AI are transforming energy systems, bridging technology and practical industry needs.

UCalgary researchers and startups shine at GES Canada awards

UCalgary’s work earned recognition across multiple fronts at the Global Energy Show Canada Awards announced on June 12.

Dr. Milana Trifkovic, PhD, of the Schulich School of Engineering received the award for Excellence in Energy Research for her groundbreaking research in revolutionizing nanomaterials with AsphaDots, tiny dots derived from oilsands asphaltenes, a key component of bitumen, the heavy oil found in oilsands.

UCalgary alum Dr. Mina Zarabian, PhD’19, received the Emerging Leader Award. Zarabian is CEO and co-founder of Carbonova Corp., which also won the Emerging Clean Technologies category.

TOSSA Sustainability Services Inc., co-founded by Hannouf, Gates and SAPL associate professor Dr. Getachew Assefa, PhD, was nominated in two award categories: Disruptive Digital Innovator and Excellence in Energy Research.
