To all members of the University of Calgary community:

We are announcing our Winter 2021 plans today alongside our large research institution partners in Alberta — the University of Alberta and the University of Lethbridge. Our hope is to provide students, instructors and university planners the certainties they need to prepare courses and campuses for the winter semester.

Instruction in the 2021 winter term will continue to be delivered with a blend of face-to-face and online modalities.

This decision, subject to evolving public health guidelines, best creates the meaningful learning and engagement so essential to student experience, and will maximize the number of students that can safely be on campus. This decision was reached after consultation with public health experts and our community.

For the winter term, academic units will be planning their face-to-face course components within a 30-student maximum cap as a guideline, with some possible exceptions. Our planning has shown we can safely accommodate this next phase, allowing us to expand upon our ability to deliver learning in person. Academic units, in consultation with their academic staff, will decide the modality of course components within the guidelines and communicate them to students by Oct. 30. The upcoming winter term represents a further reopening of University of Calgary campuses, from 20-per-cent to 30-per-cent in-person learning.

As always, please review FAQs and information provided on UCalgary.ca/covid-19 as these resources are updated regularly.

Thank you for embracing the teaching and learning experience during the pandemic. We notice the incredible resilience of students, faculty and staff each day and thank everyone for all you are doing during this difficult and unusual time. Our community enables UCalgary’s ability to deliver meaningful student-centered learning experiences.

Sincerely,

Ed McCauley
President and Vice-Chancellor
