The Faculty of Arts offers limited funding for various faculty-sponsored initiatives. These include:

The Energizing Arts Grants support a wide range of scholarly activity, including research, creative activity, and knowledge creation and exchange. These grants are intended to accelerate research and creative programs, producing outputs that will raise the scholar’s capacity for success in other grant competitions. The Energizing Arts Grants are distinct from Seed Grants. Grant recipients are expected to initiate and complete proposed projects within the 18-month award period. Applicants are encouraged to think about ways their proposed research project fits with the strategic priorities of the University of Calgary and the Faculty of Arts.

Grants of up to $5,000 are available.

These grants will support research projects that focus on issues of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility broadly conceived. We invite projects that center around problems and opportunities in all areas of the humanities, visual, creative and performing arts, as well as social sciences in investigating issues of EDIA within the fabric of our culture and society. EDIA-focused research projects may also extend their impact through tailored knowledge engagement activities.

Up to $15,000 per grant is available.

A well-developed EDIA research grant can strengthen a New Frontiers in Research Fund applications where EDIA considerations are a requirement.

The objective of this fellowship is to further the Faculty of Arts’ strategic priority of advancing equity, diversity, and inclusion on campus and in wider communities. The fellowship recognizes a leader in research, creation, and/or teaching who aims in their work to create significant and sustainable change for equity-deserving groups, including women, racialized persons, Indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, and LGBTQ2S+ communities. During the year of the award, the scholar will undertake impactful scholarly, creative, teaching, and/or community-engagement activities with clear outcomes toward these aims. The successful recipient will present their work and its impact at a public lecture, performance, or exhibition organized by the Faculty of Arts at the end of the fellowship’s term.

The fellowship is awarded on an annual basis. It is valued at $15,000. The award’s tenure is 12 months.

If a portion of the award is intended to be used to obtain release from teaching, the application must include a letter of support from the applicant’s Department Head or School Director.

Intended to provide funding to graduate or undergraduate student associations in support of locally hosted workshops, conferences, symposia, etc. All applications must have a faculty sponsor for the event to be considered. Grants will be in the range of $500 - $2,000.

Support the inclusion of indigenous content in a broad range of activities including teaching, presentations, on campus events, elder participation in events, blessings, etc. Applications will be reviewed by a member of Michael Hart's office prior to submission. Grants will usually be in the range of $250-$1,000 (in certain circumstances, higher amounts will be considered).

This grant is intended to support innovation in our communities through collaborative knowledge generation, a focus on the public sphere, and real-world impact. In particular, we invite grant applications that address one or more of the following: (1) engage in a collaborative approach to the development or implementation of co-created knowledge, solutions, and opportunities through research/creation relations between members of the Faculty of Arts and non-academic partners; (2) focus on research/creation which has outreach activities to the public sphere, communities, or organizations; and, (3) have results which may inform practices, create new awareness, identify new opportunities of mutual interest, or shape public policy in order to help solve or identify problems within our communities.

Up to $15,000 per grant is available.

These activities may contribute to future applications to SSHRC Partnership Grant programs. While not required, the applications that may lead to a future Tri-Agency application will be viewed positively.

The Faculty of Arts Seed Grants support a wide range of scholarly activity, including pilot studies, travel to archives for preliminary research, student research assistance to lay the foundations for a larger, external grant application.  Specifically, these grants are intended to support application to a Tri-Agency funding program within 18 months of receipt. Grant recipients are expected to initiate and complete proposed projects within the 18-month award period.

Grants up to $7,500 are available.

This fellowship is established in memory of Thelma Margaret Horte. Ms. Horte was committed to advancing the cause of women in society and equality in the workplace, and interested in areas such as women’s human and civil rights as well as women’s active participation in society. To capture Thelma Margaret Horte’s commitment to women’s causes, this fellowship will be awarded to a faculty member in the Faculty of Arts pursuing research within this field.

The fellowship is awarded on an annual basis. It is valued at $10,000.

The award’s tenure is six months, to be taken up between 1 July – 31 December or 1 January – 30 June in the academic year of the award’s receipt. An award being used to obtain release from teaching must be supported by a department head’s or school director’s letter of approval.

Support activities advancing scholarship. Appropriate activities might include, but are not limited to, convening scholars from different disciplines and/or departments to share research methods or results; organizing and hosting conferences and/or visiting speakers; and advertising or publicizing research activities. Scholarly Activity Grants will be in the range of $500 - $1,000.

Support course- and curriculum- related activities in undergraduate and graduate teaching, normally for a significant number of students (typically 10 or more). Appropriate activities might include, but are not limited to events (open to more than one discipline or department); visiting speakers; course based symposia; or materials and supplies (e.g. software license fees, memberships). Teaching Activity Grants will not exceed $750.

This grant is designed to catalyze collaborative, transdisciplinary research/creation projects, broadly understood, which are led by a principal investigator or co-investigators from the Faculty of Arts. The collaboration must be transdisciplinary, with the team members from disciplines outside of the Faculty of Arts. Team members can also include scholars from outside of the University of Calgary, provided they represent disciplines other than those housed in the Faculty of Arts. Team members from non-academic groups may also be included; however, academic collaborators external to the Faculty are required. The team members should not have collaborated previously on externally funded partnership grants. Interdisciplinary Working Group teams within the Calgary Institute for the Humanities (CIH) are eligible to apply.

Up to $15,000 per grant is available.

Potential outcomes can include a future New Frontiers in Research Fund grant application.

Support faculty members’ presentations at conferences, colloquia, festivals, workshops, and similar forums. Faculty may receive an award once every three fiscal years. Travel grants are available to faculty with continuing appointments. Travel Grants will not exceed $1,000.
