Faculty and Students Update: April 2019

Jeremy Brown and his saxophone students will perform Allan Gordon Bell’s new work Taking the High Road at the UCalgary president's installation ceremony on April 8.

Last January, international guest artist Thomas Moschopoulos offered a Block Week Course on Codes of Performance in Ancient Drama. In June, faculty members Christine Brubaker and Valerie Campbell will travel to Greece to scout locations and opportunities for an upcoming travel course planned for June 2020.

Laura Hynes will perform John Corigliano's Mr. Tambourine Man in the National Music Centre's Studio Bell on May 2. John Corigliano will be present and part of a pre-concert chat at 6:45.

Clem Martini's book The Comedian has been shortlisted for a Writers' Guild of Alberta Fiction Award. The winners will be announced on June 8.

Calgary’s Timepoint Ensemble premiered Laurie Radford’s most recent composition, …so to speak…, a mini-concert for bass clarinet and French horn accompanied by flute, baritone saxophone, electric guitar, percussion and piano, and live electronics on March 22 at Doherty Hall.

April Viczko will give a presentation on the Wardrobe of the Future at the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (PQ). She will discuss her recent work at the Banff Centre with electronics, wearable LED’s and fiber optics inside costumes.

Student updates

Last month, Hayley McDougall, Sarah Kenny’s BKin/BA Dance Honours student, presented her undergraduate thesis project One-year injury history among female Highland dancers 14 years and older at Research Revealed at the University of Lethbridge.

This Friday, PhD student, Meghan Critchley will be joining President McCauley on a panel at the Calgary Youth Science Fair. Meghan and Sarah Kenny’s shared perspective of Dance Science, the merging of performing arts and kinesiology, will be a highlight of the panel talk.

Several students from Drama, Music and CMD will be participating in the set-up of the Canadian National Professional Exhibition in Prague for PQ. They will also be participating in offerings at the PQ, including a workshop led by Peter Balkwill. DRAM 313 has created a component that will be presented inside the PQ Canadian Student Exhibition.
