In Memoriam: Quenten Doolittle

Quenten in London, 2015.

The School of Performing Arts is mourning the passing of Professor Emeritus Quenten Doolittle. Quenten beloved husband of Joyce Doolittle (nee Donahue) of Calgary, AB, passed away on March 9, 2018 at the age of 92 years.

Music Professor Allan Bell on Quenten:

"When I first arrived at the then Department of Music at the University of Calgary, Quenten Doolittle was a senior colleague who took an interest in my work. He was soft-spoken yet fiercely intelligent and genuinely committed to artistic creativity. I remember the envy that I felt as he spoke of all of the concerts and festivals of new music that he and Joyce had recently attended, as well as all of the new theatre events and visual art galleries and openings. I also remember the warmth of their hospitality: their numerous receptions and other gatherings in their home, filled with animated conversation, surrounded by paintings, prints, sculpture and books, redolent with the smell of delicious food and wine. I was one of the young composers who benefitted a great deal by his work in the founding of New Works Calgary, for which I will always be grateful. After their retirement, he and Joyce were always at concerts of new music and he always had something insightful and kind to say to the composers whose works had been presented. That he will no longer be among us, his creative colleagues, is a painful realization."
