Celebrating Alberta’s first interpreter software platform: Meet LISA

On May 30, 2019, Languages in Motion, a Calgary based company, launched Alberta’s first interpreter software platform. The launch included an overview and demonstration of the new “uber-like” app that allows users to arrange an In-Person Interpreter, or access On Demand Video and Phone Interpreting from the smartphone app. Multi-lingual communication is really now just the push of a button away for Albertans.

During the demo Bill Dodd, Director of Interpreting Services at LiM, spoke of his time in the Calgary Police Service and how a bomb threat could have been mitigated and hours of time saved if they had access to this type of software. He spoke of its importance for the Public Sector of Alberta, namely, the Police Services, Court, and Health Services in Alberta and in Canada.

The University of Calgary’s Faculty of Arts was proud to support this event to both celebrate alumnus Michael Burak BA’12, Languages in Motion’s Founder and CEO, and showcase the ways the School of Languages, Linguistics, Literatures and Cultures can support future interpreters. Mark Conliffe, Director of the SLLLC, spoke about the importance of communication in our world today and how this new app will help support the diversity of Alberta.
