Chancellor Deborah Yedlin to be formally installed at fall convocation
Community leader and renowned journalist Deborah Yedlin will be sworn in as the 14th chancellor of the University of Calgary during the morning convocation ceremony on Nov. 16, 2018.
The Chancellor serves as the Chair of the Senate, presides over degree-conferring ceremonies at our university and acts as an ambassador for the University of Calgary in the community. Yedlin officially assumed her four-year term as chancellor in July, succeeding Dr. Robert Thirsk.
Growing up as the daughter of two professional educators, Yedlin developed a deep respect for the transformational power of education. She went on to attain a BA in Economics and English from the University of Alberta, an MBA from Queen’s University, and the Institute of Corporate Directors' Director (ICD.D) designation through the Haskayne School of Business.
For more than two decades, Yedlin has built up a reputation as a keen business journalist, writing columns in the Financial Post, the Globe and Mail and the Calgary Herald. Her rigorous journalism has also made Yedlin a sought-after commentator on Canadian business and the energy sector for CBC Radio and Television and CTV.
Since moving to Calgary in 1992, Yedlin has been very active in our local community. She has contributed her time and leadership to a number of arts and community organizations, including YMCA Calgary, the Calgary Philharmonic, the Dean’s Advisory Council for the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary, Winsport, and the United Way of Calgary.
Please join me in celebrating Deborah Yedlin’s installation as our university’s 14th chancellor.
The University of Calgary’s fall convocation ceremonies will take place on Friday, Nov. 16. The morning ceremony and the installation of the chancellor will be held at 9:30 a.m. The afternoon ceremony and the Order of the University of Calgary presentation will begin at 2 p.m. Both ceremonies are held in the Jack Simpson Gymnasium in the Kinesiology Complex and are open to the public.
