First-gen kickoff recap
The First-Generation Students Program kicked off on Sept. 25 with an event that celebrated connection, support, and shared experiences among first-generation students. Hosted by the Chancellor Cuthbertson Student Success Centre, the event welcomed and brought together students who are the first in their families to attend university.
The kickoff gave first-gen students the opportunity to meet fellow first-gen students, hear about each other’s unique stories, and learn about the different resources available on campus to support their university experience. The afternoon was filled with fun activities, snacks, and lots of conversation.
Many first-gen students enter university without family members who have experienced post-secondary, which can often make the transition feel overwhelming. The First-Gen Program helps to ease that transition by offering workshops, events, and a mentorship program where students can receive guidance from mentors who have been in their shoes.
“Our program is focused on helping first-year students make the transition to university,” says First-Generation Student Programs Coordinator, Mariann Howell. “It can be challenging enough to come to university, and when you add on things like moving away from home or being the first in your family to attend, that transition can be even harder.”
Beyond the kickoff, the program continues to build community for first-gen students and supports them through their journey.
