The number of international students is growing at Canadian universities. Through its international strategy, the University of Calgary has set a clear goal to increase the number of both undergraduate and graduate students who come from abroad to study.

Increasingly, these international students bring with them a partner or a spouse, and most often, that person is a woman who holds advanced degrees and has had her own career prior to the move to Canada.

And while there are supports in place to help the international student in acclimating to their new environment, the partner or spouse is often challenged to find their way.

The Werklund School of Education’s Nancy Arthur has partnered with colleagues to study this issue, and she discusses their Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) -funded research in this Quick Chat.
