UCVM PhD candidate wins prestigious Killam scholarship

Congratulations to Stephen Pollo (PhD Candidate with Dr. James Wasmuth) on his pre-doctoral Killam scholarship award!

UCVM PhD candidate, Stephen Pollo has been awarded the pre-doctoral Killam scholarship award.

Stephen is an emerging leader in both research and education, and excels in the fields of parasitology and bioinformatics. His PhD research is changing our understanding of how helminths develop from egg-to-adult, and how helminths interact with their hosts. Stephen developed bioinformatics courses that can be delivered and have impact in low resource communities, and since 2018, Stephen has taught workshops in Ethiopia. He has made significant contributions to the Host-Parasite Interactions (HPI) research training network, and he has developed public engagement materials that are used in Calgary schools and public libraries.
Dorothy Johnston Killam’s desire was that those selected to receive Scholarships “shall be likely to contribute to the advancement of learning or to win distinction in a profession” and Stephen is well on his way to doing just that.
