2023 Chiniki Lecture Series – Eden Valley Reserve and The Vanishing Point: Reflections After 50 Years

Friday, March 3, 2:00-4:00pm in Science Theatre 147 (University of Calgary) or Saturday, March 4, 2:30-4:30pm in artsPlace (950 8 Ave, Canmore, AB). The same lecture will be given on both days.

The Chiniki Lecture series is hosted annually in partnership between the Stoney Nakoda Nations and the History Graduate Students Union. Inspired by the desire to engage the broader community with new research in First Nations history, the lectures are free and open to all academics, students, and members of the public. This year’s event celebrates the 50th anniversary of the publication of W.O. Mitchell’s classic novel The Vanishing Point, which is based on Mitchell’s time spent as a teacher at the Eden Valley Reserve, southwest of Calgary. Special guests include Orm Mitchell, son of W.O. Mitchell, who will provide personal insights into the experiences that went into making the novel. By delving into themes that remain as relevant today as they did 50 years ago, such as the challenges of transitioning between reservation and city life, this event aims to reflect on the history of the Eden Valley Reserve, celebrate Alberta literature, and encourage appreciation for the inspirational landscape that surrounds us.
