Award-winning play unveils love on stage
Last Friday Nov. 24, the School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) Drama Division kicked off its Mainstage season with Shakespeare in Love, written by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard, adapted for the stage by Lee Hall.
Set in 16th-century London, upstart playwright William Shakespeare battles with writer's block and discovers unexpected inspiration in the irrepressible pull of a forbidden romance. This award-winning play is a love letter to the theatre and a refreshing and hilarious portrayal of Shakespeare's life and art.
“We are thrilled to open our season with this delightful and whip-smart play,” says Christine Brubaker, SCPA Drama Division lead. “Our production features work from over 40 students in our undergraduate and graduate programs. For lots of us, this had been a favourite movie. I can assure you the play is even better. Can’t wait to see you at the theatre.”
Under the direction of MFA candidate Steven Conde, the talented cast and crew of the SCPA Drama Division have come together to bring this production to life. The play also features the outstanding designs of UCalgary alumni Hanne Loosen and Anton Degroot.
“Working on Shakespeare in Love has reminded me and continues to remind me to celebrate having the opportunity to make theatre,” says Conde. “The process of creation is a most sacred endeavour and to get to share that with like-minded individuals is a gift. The theatre brings people together and unites those of different beliefs, social classes, political inclinations and ideologies. Even for but a few hours, we experience the world as it should be.”
Be part of an evening of love, laughter, and the timeless allure of Shakespeare’s words and world.
Shakespeare in Love takes place until Dec. 2, 2023 at the Reeve Theatre.
