G. Gordon Clarke Bursary

The G. Gordon Clarke Bursary (formerly The Ziff Energy Group Bursary) is offered annually to a continuing undergraduate student majoring in economics, and is granted on the basis of academic merit and financial need.

Victor Yang Song Graduate Student Teaching Award

In 2012 Victor Song was the recipient of the first Graduate Student Teaching Award offered by the Department of Economics to a doctoral student. This scholarship honours Victor Song, his commitment to supporting graduate students who demonstrate excellence in teaching and his appreciation for all faculty members, staff and graduate colleagues who helped and supported his study at the University of Calgary.

James D. Gaisford Research Prize

A committee, chaired by the Head of the Research Activities Committee, will adjudicate the Second Year Research Papers, and award the best Second Year Research Paper by a PhD student with $1000. Excellence in Dissertation Research Award

(Department Recommended Award)
Previously known as the Anton and Dalgarno Memorial Post-Candidacy Research Award in honor of Dr. Frank Anton, who was appointed the first Department Head of Economics at the University of Calgary in 1967. As a leader and mentor, Frank’s wisdom and integrity were instrumental in building the Economics Department. “Jock” Dalgarno immigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1924 where he settled in the Mossleigh district of Alberta and farmed until 1972. Jock loved the prairies and came to appreciate the importance of understanding economics in successful farming. This scholarship honours Dr. Frank Anton and Jock Dalgarno. To borrow from poetry: “He does not die who can bequeath some influence to the land he loves.”

Open to students registered full-time in a thesis-based graduate program in the Department of Economics. Students conducting research in agricultural economics will be considered first for this scholarship.

Economics Society of Calgary Graduate Scholarship

(Department Recommended Award)
The Economics Society of Calgary (ESC) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving the understanding of economics within and around Calgary. The ESC is a chapter of the Canadian Association for Business Economics (CABE). The chapter was founded in 1965 to provide regular meetings for discussion and exchange of ideas in the area of economics, to promote public awareness and understanding of current economic issues and problems, to further economic knowledge in the Calgary area in conjunction with institutions of higher learning, and to provide for the social fellowship of individuals with a common interest in the field of economics and business.

Open to students registered in the first year of a graduate program in the Department of Economics. The recipient will be selected on the basis of academic standing and scholarship as evidenced by the documentation available to the adjudicators.

Stephen G. Peitchinis Memorial Graduate Recruitment Scholarship

(Department Recommended Award)
In a career that spanned more than three decades, Stephen Peitchinis (1925–2004) was one of  Canada’s most respected and influential commentators on economic policy. A talented educator and prolific scholar, he joined the University of Calgary in 1968 as professor of economics, was dean of the School of Business (now the Haskayne School of Business) from 1973 to 1975 and head of the Department of Economics from 1985-1991, before retiring in 1992. This award was established to honour Dr. Petichinis’ contributions to the Department of Economics at the University of Calgary.

Open to students entering a full-time master's program in the Department of Economics. This award may be held in combination with any other award.
