The University of Calgary is proud to establish a prestigious new scholarship honouring the legacy of the Rt. Hon. Stephen J. Harper, distinguished UCalgary alum, acclaimed economist and 22nd Prime Minister of Canada.
The Rt. Hon. Stephen J. Harper Scholarships in Economics celebrate his profound contributions to public policy and national governance, which positioned Canada as a trusted authority in the global economic landscape. Harper has long credited his University of Calgary education — earning his Bachelor of Arts (Econ) in 1985 and Master of Arts (Econ) in 1991 — as giving him a strong foundation for a truly remarkable career.
“The Canadian advantage was built on sound economics and responsible public policy. Our future depends on cultivating leaders who can uphold and advance this foundation, and that starts with excellence in education. My University of Calgary education provided that essential foundation. I am proud to launch these new scholarships to help equip the next generation of Canadian students with the analytical rigour and real-world perspective needed to meet tomorrow’s challenges.”

In that spirit, the Harper Scholarships will cultivate the next generation of economic leaders who embody Mr. Harper’s drive and integrity — in an environment that will unlock their full potential. A campus of thought leaders and problem solvers, UCalgary fosters innovation and inspires excellence with a future-focused student experience, purposeful community collaboration, and a culture of discovery that brings bold ideas to life.
These undergraduate and graduate awards will help attract accomplished and promising students to UCalgary and prepare them to confidently make their mark on the world — just like Canada's 22nd Prime Minister.
“The University of Calgary fosters bold, entrepreneurial thinking, preparing students to take on grand challenges and turn disruption into opportunity. Prime Minister Harper stands as a testament to that approach. We’re proud to honour Prime Minister Harper with these scholarships and empower bright minds to lead with integrity and purpose.”
