Faculty of Arts Renewal

To refresh and reinvigorate the future of Arts at the University of Calgary.

• UCalgary Arts underwent a unit review earlier in 2024.
  • The Provost's Office led this process with external reviewers.
  • External reviewers met with faculty, staff and student groups.
  • Data on enrollment trends, program demand and our financial context guided the assessment results.
  • The assessment provided valuable recommendations particularly on teaching, learning,and ensuring program sustainability.

This Arts renewal will help guide us towards a vibrant and sustainable future for teaching, learning and research in our Faculty.

• After careful review of information and findings, the following suspensions have been approved by the Ministry of Advanced Education. We have stopped new admissions starting Fall 2025 in select programs:
  • Undergraduate (effective July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2029)
  • Graduate (effective July 1, 2025 – June 30, 2027)
• This Arts renewal will re-imagine our offerings and identify new areas of focus.

• To be in alignment with our faculty and institutional strategic plans.
• To invigorate programs and strengthen our capacity to support excellence in teaching, learning, research and artistic practice.

This initiative reflects our strong commitment to ensuring a vibrant and sustainable future for teaching, learning and research across the Arts at the University of Calgary.

• Consultation with students is at the heart of this process.
• Although we are not accepting new applications for select programs starting Fall 2025, current students in those programs will not be affected by this process.
• You will still complete your degree, and receive the high-quality education that you expect from the University of Calgary.
• We're committed to supporting you through your academic journey.
• Courses in these important subjects will continue to be available to students across the university.
• The Faculty of Arts Student Engagement Framework for Program Proposals outlines the standard approach for student engagement for program proposals (i.e., program pauses, suspensions, or terminations) in the Faculty of Arts.

• This Arts renewal will refresh our offerings and identify new areas of focus.
• We will still teach courses in these areas.
• Faculty, staff, students, alumni and the wider community will work with the Faculty of Arts and the University of Calgary to explore new, imaginative and innovative program configurations and partnerships.

We understand that sessionals are deployed differently across our disciplines and there will always be a place for such expertise in our programs. We expect that through the Arts renewal process, we will be able to make better use of this very important resource.
