The Department of Economics Alumni conference celebrates the success of our alumni and provides current graduate students with an opportunity to connect with and hear from them.
Highlights of the Inaugural Alumni Conference
On the 15th of March 2014, the Department of Economics hosted the Inaugural Alumni Conference. The conference included sessions on trade, climate change, intellectual property protection, and environmental policy. Special thanks to Jevan Cherniwchan (Alberta School of Business), Olena Ivus (Queen's School of Business), Itziar Lazkano (University of Wisconsin Milwaukee), and Jennifer Winter (The School of Public Policy, University of Calgary) for presenting their work and to Younes Ahmadi, Alaz Munzur, Yuatro Sakai, and Shan Wan for their thoughtful comments.
Dr. Jevan Cherniwchan
is an Assistant Professor in the Alberta School of Business at the
University of Alberta. His work uses both theory and empirics to explore the relationship between growth, trade, and the environment. Some of his research examines the relationship between national welfare and trade barriers focusing on Canada's trade performance in the late 19th century. His other work examines the short and long run effects of trade, and the importance of taking into account firm level behaviour when examining the relationship between trade liberalization and the environment. Dr. Cherniwchan received his Ph.D. from the University of Calgary in 2013.
Dr. Olena Ivus
is an Assistant Professor of Business Economics at Queen's School of
Business. Her research employs both theory and empirical work to study aspects of international trade law and regulation, foreign direct investment, intellectual property protection, and research & development activity. In the Fall of 2010, she won the World Trade Organization (WTO) Essay Award for Young Economists. Dr. Ivus received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Calgary in 2009.
Dr. Itziar Lazkano
is an Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Wisconsin-
Milwaukee. Her research focuses on environmental macroeconomics, economic growth and issues related to environmental and resource management. Her research combines empirical evidence and theory to find efficient solutions to reconcile economic growth
and environmental concerns. In 2012, she received the FEEM award from the European Economic Association aimed at rewarding the best research by young economists. Dr. Lazkano received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Calgary in 2011.
Dr. Jennifer Winter
is an Economist and Research Associate in the Energy and
Environmental Policy Area at The School of Public Policy at the University of Calgary. Her research is focused on the effects of government regulation and laws on the development of natural resources. Her Ph.D. thesis was on the effects of government policy on the development of exhaustible resources, with a focus on Alberta and Saskatchewan. Dr. Winter received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Calgary in 2011.
