(Law and Society) - Power, Music, Censorship and Everything in Between

Abstract:
This presentation examines the history of music censorship in the US, focusing on five artists who faced significant censorship throughout their careers: The Beatles, Madonna, N.W.A., The Dixie Chicks (now The Chicks), and Eminem. My research aims to explore and understand the interrelation of power and identity. By identifying three forms of censorship—formal, informal, and ambiguous—my research explores how these mechanisms intersect and influence artists and their work, begging the question of who determines what "bad" music is. The power (of censorship) is decentralized from the state and is instead vested in the hands of the public and the self-proclaimed moral police who work together with the state to create a nearly panoptical society. The creation of the surveyed society leads to increased cases of self-censorship, which I argue is injurious to the proper flourishing and development of society and the arts. Drawing on Michel Foucault's power/knowledge and self-regulation theories, this study analyzes the effects of censorship on individuality, identity, and authenticity while considering its broader impact on musical development. Through a thematic analysis of song lyrics, personality codes, and shifts in artistic expression, this research identifies instances where external pressures might have influenced creative output. Contrary to expectations, the findings reveal no discernible negative change to the authenticity or lyrical integrity of the artists' work. However, significant personal and professional impacts were observed, underscoring the multifaceted nature of censorship as a political and social tool. While this study notes differential treatment based on race and gender, these issues remain outside its scope. Ultimately, the research highlights the interplay between power, regulation, and resistance in the music industry, offering insights into the broader sociological implications of censorship.
