About

The history department is among the oldest continuous institutions on campus, long predating the University of Calgary’s independence from the University of Alberta in 1966. Comprised of 25 full-time faculty, several permanent adjuncts, and a rotating group of sessional instructors. We are dedicated to the twin missions of scholarly research and top-quality teaching. Our students learn about the past while developing marketable skills in research, analysis, and communication. With special strength in the history of Europe and Britain, Canada, and the rest of the Americas, we also offer courses on Asia and Africa as well as global and comparative courses in such themes as military, diplomatic, environmental, and gender history. The Department is also the proud home of the Canadian and Latin American Studies programs.
