The theme of our conference examines the everyday social, political, economic, and geographic conditions of people living in and between borders and boundaries, both literal and metaphorical. In the humanities, including history, literature,philosophy, religion, andrelated fields, reflecting on and understanding these conditions in the past allow us to accept and embrace the complexities and importance of those periphery in the present. Our goal is thus to explore people’s existence in and around the edges of society, through an interdisciplinary and intersectional lens, across time and cultural differences.

Possible topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Lifeways and agencyof individuals livingon historical and modern borders;
  • Boundaries between the public/private sphere;
  • Literary, historical, and social intersections of gender and sexuality;
  • Social and historicaleffects of living in borderlands;
  • Mental and physical health as it pertains to the periphery, both social and geographic;
  • And much more!
