Research
Areas of Research
Much of my current work is researching community and household resilience, food and water security in Sub-Saharan Africa, in support of international development programs. I have particular interest in climate change adaptation, migration, governance, gender equality and women's empowerment
I have led several dozen large program evaluations around the world, working with multi-disciplinary teams of local researchers. Through this experience I am increasingly interested in the way that such research can be a part of mechanisms to empower citizens to have a stronger and more effective voice in governance and even international affairs. Methods are crucial, and it is essential to combine a critical researcher perspective with a keen awareness of the practicality of program management.
Currently I am part of a PhD program commitee for an Iranian university, in which I also teach the Social Determinants of Health, and Program Management. I have worked in numerous community health settings, from First Nations community programs, to integrated multi-sectoral programs internationally which deal with water, sanitation, hygiene, nutrition, child protection, sexual and reproductive health.
Following my PhD research in multi-actor networks for urban water supply, I led the consulting team preparing the Water Integrity Global Outlook report for the Water Integrity Network. I aim to continue researching the interface between the inclusion of peri-urban communities in strengthening governance for water supply, enhancing the right to water and sanitation, and preparing proposals to extend access to water and sanitation for all.
