The English Department consists of approximately 35 full time faculty members teaching and researching in both traditional and emerging fields, housed in one of the largest and most dynamic Faculty of Arts in the country.
Studying English will offer you a strong centre from which to explore the world within and beyond the university. The English Department demands intellectual curiosity and develops your speech, writing, and critical thinking.
Creative Writing
The creative writing program is one of the triumphs of our university. Aided by the Calgary Distinguished Writers Program, it has attracted national and international acclaim, and is one of the busiest and most productive areas of our department.

The Calgary Distinguished Writers Program strives to advance the careers of Canadian writers, invigorate the Calgary writing community, and enhance the activities of the Faculty of Arts and the Department of English.
Research clusters
Research in the Department of English spans diverse areas, methods and models. It transcends historical periods, national and geographical boundaries, theoretical methodologies, and forms of media.
