Dr. Ben Whaley

Dr. Ben Whaley’s research engages discourses of trauma and ethno-racial identity in contemporary Japanese popular culture, including literature, manga (print comics), and video games from Japan. Ben’s work seeks not only to elevate marginalized voices and media within the broader discipline of Japanese studies, but also to de-center and destabilize literary and media canons by highlighting the work of minority authors, as well as those disenfranchised or discriminated against in Japan today.
