About Religious Studies

Religious Studies is the academic, non-confessional study of the world’s religions and the people who practice them. The study of religion seeks to understand religions and their practitioners in their own historical and cultural contexts, as well as in comparative perspective with other traditions.

Religious Studies considers both the long histories of many of the word’s religions and the current practices and beliefs that are popular today. It approaches the study of religion through a variety of theories and methodologies, including, but not limited to, those employed in the fields of history, philosophy, ethnography, and literary studies.

Religious Studies minor courses

The Religious Studies minor at the University of Calgary offers students a flexible option to study a variety of religious traditions and theoretical frameworks. The program is particularly strong in the study of Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, and theories and philosophies of religion. Students are offered a variety of options to gain a deeper academic understanding of their own cultural traditions or to learn about religions that are completely new to them. Students interested in pursuing the minor in religious studies are encouraged (but not required) to start with one of our 200 level courses:
