Plagiarism and cheating

Intellectual honesty is the cornerstone of your university experience. It's your responsibility.

Each course that you undertake in your pursuit of an undergraduate degree is an exercise in the advancement of knowledge and as such, each assignment that you complete as a student must be completed honestly. Dishonesty is often referred to as plagiarism, cheating or other academic misconduct. There are severe penalties for intellectual dishonesty that range from a failing grade to expulsion from the University. The following are minimum requirements to be followed in order to maintain the standard of intellectual honesty that is demanded at the university level. In each course you take, your instructor will provide you with further details and instructions.

Intellectual honesty requirements

Papers and reports must be consistent with the highest standards of academic honesty.

  • All quotations must be properly indicated.

  • Proper documentation is required throughout. Depending on the instructions provided for a particular course, students should use: footnotes, endnotes and/or a scientific style of internal documentation — i.e., (Author, Date, Page) or (Author, Date) as circumstances warrant — in conjunction with an appropriately structured list of references. Remember that in addition to quotations, documentation is required for: paraphrased tracts, original ideas of other authors, and factual or statistical information that is not common knowledge. Paraphrasing, however, is seldom helpful and should be avoided. Remember that all data tables, graphs etc. must be accompanied by a list of sources.

  • A list of references must be included. Websites must include the author (where provided), date (where provided), site name, organization, date of visit, and full address. Any interviews, personal communications etc., which have been conducted must also be indicated. Acknowledgements are often placed in an initial footnote attached to your name or your project’s title.

  • Only a student’s own written work is to be submitted.

  • Unless prior approval has been obtained from all instructors concerned, a report or paper must be prepared exclusively for a single course.

Failure to comply with these standards is punished in accordance with the procedures set forth in the University Calendar. The minimum penalty for a term paper or report with inadequate documentation is a mark of zero.

Style requirements

Writing styles or formats vary across disciplines and courses. Student should be sure to check the style guidelines for each course in which they are registered.

  • Written projects should normally be word-processed using a double-spaced format.

  • Problems with spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc., will influence the evaluation of written projects.

Papers or reports that do not meet the expected standard for writing competence may receive a mark of zero.

Your responsibility

As an undergraduate student, it is your responsibility to ensure that all submissions of your work are honest. Give yourself plenty of time to complete your assignments and always consult your instructor if you have any questions or concerns about citations PRIOR to submitting your work as complete.
