In Memoriam: Petra von Morstein
Professor Emerita Petra Von Morstein passed away in Berlin on February 23, 2020. Professor Von Morstein was educated at the Universität Münster (from which she received her highest degree) and at St. Anne’s College Oxford. Before coming to Calgary as Assistant Professor in 1967, she was a lecturer at the University of Manchester. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 1971 and Professor in 1979.
In 1987 she founded the Apeiron Society for the Practice of Philosophy, a public, not-for-profit, non-academic philosophical society which continues to be active in Calgary. In 1988, she began work as a philosophical counsellor in private practice. In her practice she works with individuals and holds workshops for small groups on topics such as "Self-Identity", "Creativity", "Anxiety", "Love", "God", "Time". In 1996, she took early retirement from the University of Calgary in order to expand her work as a practitioner of philosophy in the community and in private practice.
In 2006, she was elected Vice President of the IBPP/ISPP (International Society for the Practice of Philosophy). Since 2007, she had lived in Berlin, Germany, where she continued her work as a philosophical practitioner in philosophical counselling, philosophy workshops, as well as lectures and seminars. Her publications include essays on philosophy of mind, philosophy and literature, the practice of philosophy, aesthetics, as well as translations and poetry.
