Congratulations to Emilia Kuczynski !
Winner of the 2021–22 Weyland Scholarship!
The Weyland Scholarship is offered annually to a continuing undergraduate student in the Faculty of Arts, majoring in Political Science who has interest and ability in the area of constitutional studies. This Scholarship was established in memory of Chilton Mewburn Weyland, Maurice Chilton Weyland and Richard Walter Weyland, and was made possible by Mrs. Henrietta Weyland.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Emilia Kuczynski, I completed my undergraduate degree in Political Science with a minor in Law and Society in December of 2022. I have always been interested in politics, law, and current events, so Political Science was a great fit for me, and I really enjoyed my time in the program. Aside from academics I spend my time volunteering with Taking Strides Children’s Foundation and was President of a University club. I also love to spend time outdoors skiing or hiking, so I am super grateful to live so close to the mountains!
What have your favourite courses or areas of study been so far?
I had the opportunity to take so many fascinating courses throughout my degree. However, to pick some favourites I would have to say I was really interested in courses with a focus in international relations such as POLI 483 International Law and POLI 492 Foreign Policy Analysis. I also really enjoyed classes with a legal focus such as LWSO 335 Equality Issues and POLI 342 Law and Politics. The wide variety of courses offered in the Department of Political Science at UCalgary gave me the chance to explore so many interesting topics and helped me find what I am really passionate about.
What are you planning next?
I am hoping to pursue a Master’s Degree to further my education and learn more about the areas of study I have become so passionate about. I am also considering applying to Law school, so I am spending some time prepping for that. In the meantime, I hope to gain some more work experience in my field, continue volunteering, and I am looking forward to my graduation ceremony in May!
