Mark Grosjean Postdoctoral Fellowship in Political Science

Honouring an exuberance for life and learning.

The Mark Grosjean Postdoctoral Fellowship honours Mark Grojean’s exuberance for life and learning. The 2017 Silver Medallion winner in Political Science and BA Honours graduate, Mark was set to begin the direct-entry PhD program at the University of Toronto in political philosophy when he tragically passed away in 2018. The Department of Political Science is honoured to play a part in honouring Mark’s legacy through this Postdoctoral Fellowship.

As a best-in-kind fellowship, the vision and purpose of the the Mark Grosjean Postdoctoral Fellowship in Political Science is to provide vital early-career support to exceptionally promising scholars allowing the Fellow to establish an original research agenda and contribute to political science.

The Mark Grosjean Postdoctoral Fellowship was generously endowed by Mark’s parents, Mr. Adam Grosjean, Dr. Cheri Stanzeleit and Mark’s sister, Dr. Heidi Grosjean, in December 2020. The first Fellowship is to be awarded in 2025.

Scope: Applicants working in any area of political science are eligible.

Eligibility: Unrestricted citizenship. Applicants must have earned their PhD in political science less than 4 years before the start date of the position in any given competition year.

Residency: Fellows will be in residence at UCalgary, unless required by research trips.

Anti-requisites: Applicants may not simultaneously hold another postdoctoral fellowship or any other full-time position.

Expectations: During the period of the Fellowship, the successful candidate must carry out a program of independent research, be an active, in-person, full-time participant in official departmental functions and events where possible, and disseminate the research undertaken during the Fellowship in a public forum in Calgary.

  • September 1: Application portal opens.
  • November 1: Applications due.
  • January 31: Successful applicant will normally be informed.
  • March 1: Applicants offered the Mark Grosjean Postdoctoral Fellowship will normally have one month to accept or decline the offer. The offer cannot be deferred, only be accepted or declined.
  • May 1–September 1: Start date of Fellowship.

Applications will be adjudicated by the UCalgary Department of Political Science Mark Grosjean Postdoctoral Fellowship Selection Committee. The Committee will consist of the department head and at least two additional faculty members.

A complete application will consist of the following:

  • Cover letter: max. 2 pages.
  • CV: no page limit.
  • Project proposal: max. 4 pages, plus bibliography. The project proposal should include a statement about fit with the department.
  • Letters of reference: names and contact information for 3 potential referees. Letters of reference will only be requested from short-listed applicants.
  • List of potential faculty mentors: List up to three potential faculty mentors who hold a continuing position with the Department of Political Science. The faculty mentor will be the departmental point of contact for the fellow, providing guidance to UCalgary resources and opportunities relevant to the fellowship.
  • Proof of PhD completion: For applicants without a PhD in hand, proof of completion is required by applicant’s chosen Fellowship start date.
  • Optional documents: max. 1 page (may include special circumstances; Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Accessibility and/or Indigenization statement).
