A Musical Journey Through Latin American Composers
When it comes to celebrating the rich and diverse music of Latin America, the UCalgary String Quartet has struck a harmonious chord. On Nov. 7, the quartet takes stage to showcase the masterful compositions of distinguished Latin American composers.
The UCalgary String Quartet is a virtuoso ensemble, comprising the university's finest musicians. Led by SCPA Professor of Violin Edmond Agopian, the quartet also features SCPA music student Isaac Willocks, along with violist Dean O'Brien from Calgary and cellist Beth Root Sandvoss. Together, this quartet has become a pinnacle of excellence in the Canadian music scene, captivating audiences with their exceptional talent and shared passion for music.
For this special evening, the quartet has curated a program that highlights the works of four distinguished Latin American composers: Alberto Ginastera, Heitor Villa-Lobos, Carlos Chavéz, and Silvestre Revueltas. Each of these composers has made significant contributions to the world of classical music and their works continue to be celebrated and cherished by music enthusiasts worldwide.
The program includes Alberto Ginastera's String Quartet No. 1 Op. 20, a composition that reflects Ginastera's unique style, blending traditional Argentinian folk elements with avant-garde techniques. This work is a thrilling exploration of rhythm and melody, inviting the audience to experience the essence of Latin American culture through music.
The program also feature Heitor Villa-Lobos's String Quartet No. 1, a piece that showcases the composer's Brazilian heritage. The quartet's performance will transport listeners to the heart of Brazil, where they will hear the sounds of the country's musical soul.
The quartet will also perform Carlos Chavéz's String Quartet No. 1. Chavéz, a towering figure in Mexican classical music, skillfully blends indigenous Mexican themes with modernist techniques, creating a captivating and distinct musical language.
Rounding up the program is Silvestre Revueltas's Musica de Feria (Music of the Fair). Revueltas, a Mexican composer and violinist, is known for his vibrant and often exhilarating compositions that capture the essence of Mexican fiestas. Musica de Feria is a joyful, rhythmic composition that will leave the audience tapping their feet and celebrating the vivacity of Latin American music.

A Celebration of Music by Latin American Composers will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023 at the Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall of the Rozsa Centre at the University of Calgary.
Tickets are $14 (adults) / $11 (students/seniors) and are available online through arts.ucalgary.ca/tickets or at the door.
