I love this play. While some may dismiss it as old-fashioned or overly sentimental, I believe its message resonates with all of us, regardless of time or place. Thornton Wilder’s central theme is unmistakably clear: if we fail to engage with the present moment, we risk missing the fullness of life. This play speaks to our human condition, urging us to be present, to notice, and to embrace the fleeting beauty of now.
For young actors, the challenges are profound. They must delve into a level of honesty that demands they reveal their own humanity, not merely hide behind a character. When rehearsals began in December, I asked the cast what questions they had about the play. The most common one was a simple yet profound: “Why?” After a week of rigorous discussion and in-depth research into Wilder’s life and work, they were able to answer that question for themselves. The play is timeless in its relevance, its universal message echoing across generations: don’t let life slip by unnoticed.
What truly moved the cast was Wilder’s remarkable progressiveness, especially when considering the context in which he wrote. His work challenged their assumptions, opening their minds to new perspectives. It was this intellectual and emotional challenge that drew me to this play in the first place. And I couldn’t be prouder of how our ensemble has risen to meet it, working together as a cohesive group, pushing boundaries, and growing through the experience.
If these young people represent the future, then I am filled with optimism. I invite you to sit back and allow this story to envelop you. Let yourself be swept away by the authenticity and passion they bring to it.
