Biography
Kayra Caner was born in Istanbul, Turkey. She started to play the piano at age 5. In 2010, she participated in Pera International Piano Festival in Istanbul. In 2014, she was a guest as a young musician at “Açık Radyo” radio station. In 2016, she completed her bachelor’s degree in music composition and sound engineering at Istanbul Bilgi University. She got accepted for “Sesin Yolculuğu” Festival in 2020 as a young composer. In 2021, she graduated from grade 8 of ABRSM piano performance exam and participated in Bilgi New Music Festival with her composition “Pont de la Concorde” performed by Oerknal Ensemble. She composed a work for Land’s End Ensemble for their “Clocks. Clouds, and Colours” concert in 2022. A year later, she finished her piece “Lebenslauf” for a collaboration with Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. She also performed two of her compositions in JazzFest: New Music and Free Jazz. Additionally, in 2022 and 2023, as the president of University of Calgary Graduate Music Society, she organized the international music graduate conferences. She earned “Emerging Teachers Development”, “SoTL Foundations”, “Learning Spaces & Digital Pedagogies”, “Theories and Practices”, “Developing Your Teaching Dossier”, “Equity, Diversity and Inclusion”, “Foundations of Course Design”, and “Teaching Online Program” badges offered by University of Calgary Taylor Institute of Teaching and Learning to be eligible to earn the Taylor Institute Certificate for Graduate Students. Currently, she is completing her master’s degree in music composition at the University of Calgary.
Projects
Organized the annual music graduate conference as the president of GMS.
Kayra performed her own compisition "La Vita" for solo piano and collaborated with flautist JiaJia Li to perform her other composition "Pagliccio". Jiajia and Kayra then played an improvisation together inspired by their solo works.
Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra did a reading of "Liebenslauf" composed by Kayra Caner.
Organized the annual music graduate conference as the president of GMS.
Land's End Ensemble performed "Des Glückes Stummes Schweigen" composed by Kayra Caner.
Oerknal Ensemble performed "Pont de la Concorde" composed by Kayra Caner.
