Dance@Night

Dance@Night presents the choreographic works of Bachelor of Fine Arts dance students. This year's Dance@Nightpresents works by Laura Lindgren, Abigail Dunn, Katrina Finnigan, as well as the work by Jason Owin F. Galeos, performed by the BFA Dance graduates of 2023.

A Note from the Artistic Director

Melissa Monteros, School of Creative Performing Arts, Dance Professor

We are delighted that you can join us for this very special occasion of Dance@Night! Dance@Night is the capstone experience of the senior BFA Dance students' program; the final choreographic, directorial and performance presentation of their tenure at the University.

This year, we celebrate and honor an incredibly special person in our Calgary dance community with the announcement of a new and impactful award in Dance; The Rochelle Gartner-Primiverra Memorial Award.  Rochelle was one of the early graduates of the BA Dance in 1997. I remember her extremely well; she danced the opening solo in my 1995 group work “Departures” and later travelled with Prof. Mochniej and I on our first U of C travel study course to the Baltic States. A beautiful dancer with a non-stop smile, she is lovingly remembered by her community and family through this award.

Of the 4 works you will see this evening, 3 were created by the BFA class of 2023. After more than 2 years of trying to progress in their choreographic studies in small boxes (as a result of COVID restrictions), they have been both excited and daunted at the increased possibilities that working with groups offers, and with managing larger spaces choreographically. They have progressed with determination and have been remarkable in their resilience. Each of their works is the result of their own individual pursuit of a unique artistic vision. In the closing work of the evening, we have the privilege to present artist Jason Owin F. Galeos’ work, performed by the BFA Dance graduates of 2023.

We are delighted to have you join us tonight. I hope you enjoy the evening!

Rochelle Gartner-Primiterra Memorial Award in Dance Endowment

Rochelle Marie Gartner-Primiterra

This award celebrates the life of Miss Rochelle, a talented performer, exceptional dance educator, and dedicated leader in the Calgary dance community. Rochelle was a long-time business owner of Dance With France Studio and Artist’s Elite Int’l, where she mentored, encouraged and spread the love of dance to so many of her students, dancers, choreographers, and talent in the entertainment industry. Rochelle led her life with positive leadership, cutting edge business ideas, passion, drive and determination.

Rochelle understood and promoted the enormous value for her students to continue and further their dance education by going on to get a dance degree at the UofC Dance Program, as she did herself, being one of the 1st to graduate in 1997. During her career, she performed with Calgary-based organizations such as The Young Canadians and The Calgary Stampeder Outriders, then internationally with contracts in Japan and Poland. She also worked on cruise lines for seven years all over the world – from the US, Mediterranean, Asia, Caribbean, and South America to name a few.

Made possible by The Gartner Family and Friends, this new fund honours Rochelle’s memory and her legacy while keeping her lifelong love of performing and teaching dance alive.

By creating this award, we hope to support students by encouraging and inspiring them to continue dance education and further develop their passion for the dance arts for generations to come.

Rochelle's legacy is to inspire our dancers, teachers, and leaders of tomorrow.

Storm of Prayers – Ketev

The sequel to " The Ending is not the End," created by Laura Lindgren for Dance@Noon 2021, "The Beginning of the End," brings the conclusion into emergence. The diseased fabric, once shed from the dancers, now creates curiosity, panic, and alters the environment it surrounds. The dancers are forced to make a choice; is the fabric worth touching?

Special thanks to Melissa Monteros for helping direct my senior project and instilling choreographic methods within my practice to deepen the work.

Text by Emily Dickinson - I Died For Beauty

Exploring the simple, everyday act of looking at yourself in a bathroom mirror. This piece examines the highest and lowest spectrums of human emotion and self-perception, seeing if humanity can ever find satisfaction within themselves.

Thank you to those who provided me with opportunities and support, including the cast and all involved in the creation of this project.

Sonder: the awareness that everyone has a story. When carrying the weight of an unseen story, one of disruption, oppression, and resistance, fragments of that experience remain forever embedded within the subconscious. And from this struggle a final seed of freedom, hope, and resilience is planted.

Thank you to the dancers, and to Atiyyah Ladipo, for their hard work and collaborative efforts. Thank you to all those who supported me these last four years.

Unfamiliar Grooves

Choreographer: Jason Owin F. Galeos
Dancers:  Abigail Dunn, Katrina Finnigan, Laura Lindgren

Music:
Artist - Hauschka

Text by the dancers

In this creative process, we got to explore some of my early stages of personalized movement, rediscovering senses, relationship with the floor, some contact, and expressions with and without the music.

Special Thanks to my family, my friends, Alèn Martel, Meghann Michalsky, Deanna Witwer, and Kyra Newton.
