This tiny jewel of an English-language chamber opera features Venus, the goddess of love herself, her mortal boy toy Adonis, her trouble-making son Cupid, and a host of lovers and other strangers. Performed by student singers and instrumentalists from the University of Calgary’s Collegium Musicum. Running time approximately one hour.
Music by John Blow
Text by Anne Kingsmill/Anne Killigrew
With additional material by Henry Purcell
Directed by Vanessa Porteous
Music Director: Julie Harris
Producer: Laura Hynes
Presented by Collegium Musicum
As humans we yearn for the everlasting, yet our lives are so brief, bounded by aging and death. Maybe that’s why we’re fascinated by the notion of a love between a mortal like us and an immortal being. There are so many stories: Edward and Bella, Arwen and Aragorn, The Kitsune and their earthly husbands, the Greek god Zeus and pretty much everyone. This early opera uses one of those stories, the tale of Venus, the ancient Roman goddess of love, and her ill-fated passion for a mortal man, Adonis, to explore the paradoxes and complexities of love and desire.
In our staging, a group of shepherds and shepherdesses gather for a group wedding when they are interrupted by Cupid, a trickster who despises false sentiment and delights in spreading true passion with all its complicated joys and pitfalls. He lures them all into the woods, a place of freedom and release, where a few of them reveal the true nature of their tangled romances.
Meanwhile, Cupid’s mother Venus is deep in that early, heavy-crush phase of a love affair with a mortal man, Adonis. He is totally smitten too, though he can’t help being drawn back into his regular world of hunting with his buddies. Venus urges him to go. After all, if you love someone, set them free. Still, once he’s gone, she starts to worry. Hunting can be dangerous if you’re mortal, plus why did he leave so eagerly?
Her son Cupid brings in some shepherdesses to cheer her up, and together they rail against anyone who would resist the power of love. Inspired, Venus calls upon The Graces to bless her relationship, and they appear: an ethereal, uncanny force who deliver a somewhat ambiguous message. All too soon they are gone and Venus is left alone to hunt through the now deserted woods for her beloved. Alas, he has been mortally wounded. All Venus and the shepherds can do is grieve his loss and pray that his spirit be absorbed into the cosmos.
The opera provides no easy answers. Without love, life is hardly worth living – and yet, as one shepherdess sings, “how wide, how deep the wound.”

Collegium Musicum usually performs in concert style, but we are pleased to present a staged performance of Blow’s lesser-known Venus & Adonis this year, with the addition of pieces by Blow’s friend and younger colleague, Henry Purcell. There is plenty of precedent in the history of opera for inserting extra arias to create opportunities for specific singers and this approach allowed us to offer more solo opportunities for our student talent, creating a unique and expanded story in the process: Venus and Adonis…and the Rest of Us.
English baroque composers like Purcell and Blow didn’t write very many operas, primarily composing music to be inserted into staged plays because that is what the English public wanted to see; they wrote for their time and place. It has been a delightful challenge to create something for our own time and place by combining the work of these two composers and staging it in this unique way. It has also been an honour to work with the students, with Vanessa and with all of the people behind the scenes. And thank you to Laura Hynes for her support every step of the way.
